Born December 3, 1994, in Kinsman, Ohio, Farfel came to us, his third owner, in August of 1995.
After spending about three months on the farm, he was adopted as a 4-H project, but being a typically stubborn beagle, he didn't take too well to show commands. After the 4-H year was up, his second owner put him up for adoption, as he was dog number three in a home which also had three cats. We were lucky enough to see the newspaper ad and get to his home before anyone else, and we adopted him. Farfel moved (with us) from Youngstown, Ohio, to Walnut Creek, California, the end of 2006, and he absolutely LOVES the East Bay area -- great dog smells, good weather, and no more snow!
He's a great dog, fairly well behaved, and very communicative. He lets us know when he wants to go out, needs his water bowl refilled, wants to go for a walk, and so on.
He's AKC registered, and comes from a long line of good hunters. He stands about 19 inches at the shoulder, which is larger than the standard beagle, and weighs about 40 pounds (a bit over norm due to his current medical treatment with Prednisone and Percorten). His coat is very unusual, with thick blue and brown ticking instead of brown and white patches normally seen on beagles. And it's very soft and somewhat longer fur than most beagles -- not stiff and as short as most. If not for his head markings and black patches (and his "Aarroooooo", of course), you'd never know he was a beagle! The past few years have been a bit tough on Farfel, having been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease which was overtreated resulting in Addison's Disease, which is less life-threatening. No longer "intact" due to an enlarged prostate, he's settled into senior doghood with grace and mellowness. You can contact his owners by e-mail at Shags@PlanningForLife.info .
