Born December 3, 1994, in Kinsman, Ohio, Farfel came to live with us, his third owner, in August of 1995.
After spending about three months on the farm, he was adopted as a 4-H project, but being a typically stubborn beagle, he didn't take too well to show commands. After the 4-H year was up, his second owner put him up for adoption, as he was dog number three in a home which also had three cats. We were lucky enough to see the newspaper ad and get to his home before anyone else, and we adopted him. Farfel moved (with us) from Youngstown, Ohio, to Walnut Creek, California, the end of 2006, and he absolutely LOVED the East Bay area -- great dog smells, good weather, and no more snow!
Farfel came from a long line of good rabbit hunters and stood about 19 inches at the shoulder, which is larger than the standard beagle, and weighed about 35 pounds. His coat was very unusual, with thick blue and brown ticking instead of brown and white patches normally seen on beagles. And it was very soft and somewhat longer fur than most beagles -- not stiff and as short as most. If not for his head markings and black patches (and his "Aarroooooo", of course), you'd never know he was a beagle! The past few years were a bit rough on Farfel, having been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease (which was overtreated) in 2003 resulting in Addison's Syndrome, which was less life-threatening. After moving to California, he settled into senior doghood with grace and mellowness, departing this earth for the great dog park in the sky at age 15 1/4.
